For the Sake of Realizing a New Tournament, ECA President Asks to Reduce the Number of Participants in the European League

DBasia.news – Andrea Agnelli serves as President of Juventus and ECA (European Football Club Association). On the occasion to become President of the ECA, Agnelli wanted to propose new rules.
Andrea Agnelli has been the Head of the ECA since 2017. In the ECA meeting, Agnelli was re-elected as chairman for the second period which lasted for four years.
High-ranking former Ajax goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, also received a position at the meeting. Van der Sar served as Andrea Agnelli’s representative at ECA.
Meanwhile, AC Milan’s top official, Ivan Gazidis, left the executive post of ECA. His position was replaced by Inter Milan President, Steven Zhang.
According to the L’Equipe report, Andrea Agnelli intends to reduce the participants of the top five European leagues. From this time there are 20 participants, Agnelli wants it to be reduced to 18.
This was done by Andrea Agnelli to implement the idea of holding a third European football caste competition. Later, the event would be below the Champions League and Europa League.
Reducing the number of participants is also considered to be able to increase tighter competition in each competition. In addition, giving more time to every football player to take a break.
At present, of the top five European leagues, only Bundesliga has been joined by 18 participants. Meanwhile, 20 teams joined Serie A, Premier League, LaLiga and Ligue 1.
In his remarks after being re-elected as ECA Chair, Andrea Agnelli expressed his willingness to work with UCC. It was for the sake of advancing European football.
