Gerrard Wants to Make Aston Villa A Fearless Team

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Steven Gerrard vowed to remain “fearless” in his approach to management after taking over at Aston Villa.

Never one to ignore a challenge, Gerrard’s first managerial role saw him get involved in competitive Glasgow football, where he ended Rangers’ decade-long wait for the Scottish Premiership title and ended Celtic’s dominance.

The 41-year-old now finds himself in charge of a big traditional club in English football, former European Cup winners in the form of Villa.

“As a player, many coaches and my own father said to me: ‘I want you to go out there and not be afraid and face it’. I’m not going to change,” said Gerrard.

“For me, the size of the challenge, you should be getting excited. I was so happy when I walked into the training ground (the Villa) saw ‘Fearless’ up there as one of the club’s values.

“I think to achieve your ultimate goal, that is the main trait that you and your players have to have. The other was ‘Get ready’ and they went hand in hand.

“I can’t describe the joy I feel right now.”

Gerrard, whose three-and-a-half-year tenure as Rangers boss ended this month when he replaced the sacked Dean Smith at Villa Park, refused to set targets, but he hopes Villa will start moving up the Premier League table quickly.

Villa host Brighton on Saturday (20/11) and sit 16th in the table, two points above the relegation zone after five successive league defeats.

Asked if it would be a longer process with Aston Villa than upgrading Rangers, the Liverpool legend replied: “Who knows? It will depend on me and my staff and the players, how quickly we can find a connection, togetherness and how quickly we can get used to each other.

“The sooner we can make it happen, the sooner we can get a very clear message to the players about what we expect from possession, and how organised we are.”
