James Milner had almost Left Liverpool
By db-admin
DBasia.news – James Milner admitted that he had almost left Liverpool a few years ago. Precisely in the 2016/17 season. The Reds were nothing at that time. As the coach, Jurgen Klopp, was slowly trying to build a team by bringing in the desired players.
The results can now be seen from the success of winning the Champions League, European Super Cup, Club World Cup and Premier League which fans have been waiting for the past 30 years. The hard work they put in really paid off.
Hard work was not only done by Klopp and his coaching staff, but also the players who went through ‘hell’ in following the hard coaching methods of the German manager. Liverpool midfielder, James Milner described the rigors of the way Klopp trained his players.
Famous for his philosophy in playing gegenpressing (counter-pressing), the players must constantly exert pressure, try to grab the ball as fast as possible and launch a counterattack. That method has been applied by Klopp from Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp brought it from Germany and applied it at Liverpool. As a result, some players were surprised by it, some players fell ill while undergoing the training method.
“To see one of the young players throw up on the side of the training field in one of their first training sessions, which determines rhythm, you know what you want,” James Milner told Sky Sports.
“We have to adapt to that, there have been many injuries from the start. People say, “You can’t do that!” You can, you just have to get used to it. Right away you see the tempo and intensity of the first game at Spurs. “
“It was really ridiculous – we didn’t play slow tempo under Brendan (Rodgers). The journey began with the manager’s method and how he wanted us to play.”
“You see it coming slowly. For one week the quality of play appears there and the next week we don’t do it. It’s a process; consistency starts happening and in the end, learning how to win with a bad game (badly wining) and become a more cohesive team, “explained Milner.
In addition to the player’s physique, Klopp also strengthens the mentality of players to be able to focus at all times. The method he applied was quite unique by giving three balls at once and letting the players react appropriately.
“You react to the next situation, always be alert. If you practice shooting, there may be three balls at a time. You might pass one and a milliseconds later there would be another one coming towards you to be kicked,” Milner added.
“It’s a little different from what I’ve done before, it’s based on being alert at all times in the match. Defensively, too, it’s not training from one player to the player or blocking two or four players, but doing two or three jobs at once,” concluded the 34-year-old player.
