The course of the match

The teacher vs student duel began at Elland Road. Pep Guardiola really admired Marcelo Bielsa and played a 4-3-3 tactic for Manchester City, while Bielsa used a 3-1-4-2 formation for Leeds United.

Leeds started the match with pressure and tried to take possession of the ball, but they missed a goal by Raheem Sterling in the 17th minute. Receiving the ball from Ferran Torres, Sterling scored a goal against Leeds which was guarded by Illan Meslier. City 1-0 ahead.

After that advantage City were forced to play defensively and relied on counter attacks. Leeds really gave difficulty for City with the high intensity of play they applied, but they were unlucky in this first half.

Leeds had two chances from Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling, but both chances were saved by Ederson Moraes. Until a minute of additional time in the end of the half, City were able to maintain a 1-0 advantage.

Bielsa brought on Ian Poveda-Ocampo and Rodrigo in the second half to replace Ezgjan Alioski and Tyler Roberts. The results were positive too. The two players increased Leeds’ game until an equalizer was born in the 59th minute.

Starting from a corner kick taken by Kalvin Phillips, the ball was not cleared perfectly by Ederson and hit Benjamin Mendy’s leg, then a wild ball headed towards Rodrigo who did not miss the opportunity. 1-1.

After this goal the tempo of the game began to decline. Leeds players no longer played games with high tempo as their stamina has started to decrease, but they were still dangerous on the counterattack.

City have changed control of the ball since Guardiola played Bernardo Silva, Nathan Ake and Fernandinho. However, the Leeds defense was still solid in stemming it, in fact they almost scored a goal in the 86th minute.

Patrick Bamford was onside on the counter-attack and was left one-on-one with Ederson, but Ederson won the battle and denied Bamford a chance. No more goals were created until the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
