DBasia.news – Ahead of the 2019 Ballon d’Or ceremony, Sergio Ramos, defender and captain of Real Madrid, gave his support to Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool defender, to win it. Van Dijk can follow in the footsteps of Fabio Cannavaro’s success.
The Italian and Juventus legend won the Ballon d’Or in 2006 after bringing Italian National Team to win the 2006 World Cup, Cannavaro became the first defender to win the Ballon d’Or which was then dominated by two ‘aliens’: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Van Dijk, 28, has defeated Ronaldo and Messi in the race for the 2019 European Player of the Year award. He will again compete with the two players to win the World Player of the Year award and the Ballon d’Or.
Ramos, the winner of four Champions League titles, gave his support to Van Dijk to win the Ballon d’Or. The 33-year-old defender believes Van Dijk deserved it after winning the Champions League last season and taking the Netherlands to the final of the UEFA Nations League.
“I don’t know, but if Cannavaro can win it (Ballon d’Or) why not? You have to keep the dream that you had when you were a child so that it can be realized. He has had a good season,” Ramos told the AS.
“We all always talk about Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, but the possibility of other players who can win it is a beautiful thing. If he wins, I will congratulate him. He has done the season very well,” he concluded.
