Surprise Transfers in the History of World Football
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Transfer rumors are always talked about in European football. Especially now in the winter or January 2020 transfer market.
Throughout history, various transfer records have been broken. A few expensive transfers have resulted. Conversely, it is not uncommon for players who are brought in for cheap to succeed.
In recent years, like it or not, football has become a business. Those who possess the financial strength, are those who have the opportunity to achieve top class players.
Even so, some transfers have become surprising. Here BolaSkor.com have chosen the five most shocking player transfers in history.
Diego Maradona (Barcelona to Napoli)
The news of Diego Maradona’s move from Barcelona to Napoli in 1984 produced a shock wave in the world of football at that time.
At the time the Argentine legend was trying flee from Barcelona following various disciplinary problems and poor relations with club officials. Because of that, Maradona immediately grabbed the first opportunity that came.
The world was shocked as Maradona was willing to join Napoli, the club which was struggling to avoid relegation. However, with Maradona, Napoli won two scudetti, plus Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italia, and the UEFA Cup.
Maradona stayed until 1992 before leaving for Sevilla.
Sol Campbell (Tottenham to Arsenal)
Sol Campbell’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Arsenal was surprising given the rivalry of the two clubs. For Tottenham supporters, this is the biggest betrayal.
After graduating from the Spurs academy, Sol Campbell later became captain of the club until he decided to “betray” after his contract ended in 2001.
That is, Campbell moved to a rival club while Spurs did not receive any money as Arsenal brought him in for free.
Inevitably, Campbell became one of the most hated players in the North London derby. Until now Spurs fans have not forgotten Campbell’s betrayal.
Ronaldinho (Barcelona to Milan)
Nobody expected Ronaldinho to leave Barcelona. The Brazilian has lived a golden period since joining Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003.
Ronaldinho became a pillar when Barcelona returned to LaLiga champions. Ronaldinho also won the FIFA Player of the Year award twice with Barca.
But Ronaldinho’s relationship with Barcelona, especially the coach, deteriorated. Dinho was considered undisciplined, often skipped practice, and was caught wandering in night clubs.
When Pep Guardiola arrived in 2008, Ronaldinho left AC Milan after rejecting an offer from Manchester City.
Luis Figo (Barcelona to Real Madrid)
If there is more treachery than that of Sol Campbell, then that is Luis Figo’s move from Barcelona to Real Madrid.
Real Madrid, who were then in the early era of Florentino Perez as club president, were willing to spend 62 million euros to hook Luis Figo from Barcelona in 2000. Inevitably, the Barcelona public was inflamed.
Before this surprising move, Figo was the Camp Nou idol. Figo was credited with bringing Barca twice to become champions of LaLiga.
No wonder Figo receives bad reception every time he sets foot in Camp Nou while wearing a Madrid jersey. Certainly it is still remembered the first time Figo appeared at Camp Nou, when Barcelona supporters threw pigs at him.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid to Juventus)
Although there were already signs, no one expected Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Real Madrid. After contributing a lot of goals and trophies, many thought Ronaldo would end his career with Madrid.
But the five Ballon d’Or-winning player decided to leave. With a fantastic price of 112 million euros, Ronaldo left for Juventus in the summer of 2018.
