The story behind Mesut Ozil’s number 67 jersey at Fenerbahce

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Fenerbahce have officially signed their new attacking midfielder, Mesut Ozil. The 32 year old player was brought in from Arsenal and receives a salary of 350,000 pounds per week.

As for Ozil, he joined Fenerbahce after Mikel Arteta’s name was not included in Arsenal’s squad in the Europa League and Premier League. Ozil left this January along with Sokratis whose contract was also terminated.

The player who defended Arsenal for eight years joined the club of his dreams in the past. Especially even though Ozil is German with Turkish descent like Ilkay Gundogan and Sami Khedira.

“There is always pressure on football players. I always play at big clubs and there is always pressure,” Mesut Ozil said when introduced by Fenerbahce.

“Fenerbahce is also a big club and I know there will be pressure here. This is a club I love very much. I will do my best. I hope everything will be fine.”

For Fenerbahce the transfer is big. But there is one thing that attracts attention with the jersey number he wears. Yes, Ozil didn’t choose a familiar number like 9, 10, 7, or 11 but instead he chose the number 67.

A number that is commonplace in the world of football and therefore unique. So what is the reason for Ozil to use that jersey number?

As reported by Goal, Ozil chose the number to honor his family home in Turkey. Ozil’s family comes from Hisiroglu, Zonguldak in Turkey. Hisiroglu is a village in the district which has the postal code 67802.

Ozil, who was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and a third-generation Turkish-German player chose the two leading digits of the zip code. Ozil has also confirmed that he will use the number for a long period of time.

However, Ozil is not alone in wearing a jersey number with an unusually large number. There are also Ismail Yuksek (71), Gokhan Gonul (77), Caner Erkin (88), and Kemal Ademi (99).
