Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Match, Mourinho Prepares for Several New Options
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Jose Mourinho, said he would use the match against Bayern Munich on the final matchday of Group B in the 2019/2020 Champions League, as an opportunity to experiment at his new club.
Mourinho coached Spurs last month after Mauricio Pochettino was sacked and he made his team’s 4-2 win against Olympiakos Piraeus who made sure his team made it into the last 16.
Even though Bayern are five points ahead of the London club to top the group standings, Thursday’s match at the Allianz Arena is already decisive for the two teams who are certain to qualify for the last 16. Therefore Mourinho left for Germany without including his senior player quartet.
Dele Alli, Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen all did not go to Germany. Spurs will try an experimental squad especially as some players are still injured.
Ben Davies (ankle), Erik Lamela (hamstring), Hugo Lloris (elbow), Tanguy Ndombele (groin), Michel Vorm (calf), and Harry Winks (ankle) are all absent due to injuries.
Nevertheless, Mourinho did not want to underestimate the match against Munich later.
“This is an important match because we carry the name of Tottenham Hotspur and it doesn’t matter what the game is its purpose, ambition, competition. Tottenham is Tottenham and it always gives us a sense of responsibility,” said the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach.
“We can’t finish first, we don’t have that fancy position in the draw playing against the second place (the German league), playing the second match at home, so the results won’t affect anything,” Mourinho said.
But Mourinho sees the match against Bayern as an opportunity to try other options where players like Kyle Walker-Peters, Troy Parrott, Ryan Sessegnon, and Victor Wanyama are likely to be played.
“One thing I don’t have is time, time to get to know the players well, to get to know my players well, and this is also a great opportunity for some of them to play, for some of them to prove themselves that they are capable,” continued Mourinho.
“Playing in a competition is different from playing in training and some of my children have not had the opportunity to play long in five games since I arrived. Therefore we try to combine these factors.”
