DBasia.news –  Former Liverpool player, Jamie Carragher, told the story of Jose Mourinho’s failure to become the manager of the Reds. At that time, Liverpool had two choices as manager.

Jose Mourinho became one of Liverpool’s new manager candidates after the departure of Gerard Houllier. The Special One, who was in his early career was considered one of the most promising young coaches.

However, senior players rejected the idea. In the end, Rafa Banitez who was also a candidate for the manager was chosen.

“It happened before Rafa Banitez arrived. I can share an interesting story about it. Gerard Houllier had been fired and the club has interviewed Rafa Banitez,” Carragher said as reported by Sky Sports.

“The senior players have also been told about the situation. Then, the club called out Jose Mourinho’s name. At that time, I was more familiar with Rafa Banitez who was great in LaLiga. Apparently, he would be the club’s choice.”

Jose Mourinho ended up going to the Premier League, but joined Chelsea. The Portuguese manager then won the Premier League title.

“I had a feeling Jose Mourinho wouldn’t fit in Liverpool. There are various reasons including how to behave. I will always prefer Banitez. As he is more calm. I believe Mourinho would have difficulty when training Liverpool.” Carragher stated.

“Whether he wants to coach Liverpool or not, I don’t know. We only heard that he had idolized Liverpool since he was a child.”

Jose Mourinho was transformed into one of the most successful managers in football history. Mourinho is one of the few managers who was able to win the Champions League and Europa League titles.
