Messi successfully outperformed Virgil Van Dijk from Liverpool and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or this season. This year’s trophy is the sixth Ballon d’Or trophy ever won by Messi. The ceremony took place at the Theater du Chatelet, Paris, France, Tuesday (12/03/2019) early morning Western Indonesian Time.

Messi, 32, won his sixth Ballon d’Or award above Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) and his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus), from voting done to journalists around the world.

“Today I won my sixth Ballon d’Or. This is a totally different moment, I live with my family and children,” Messi said after winning the award, on the official Ballon d’Or website.

“As my wife said, you must not stop dreaming but must work hard to improve and continue to enjoy. I am very lucky, I am so blessed.”

In addition to awarding the 2019 Ballon d’Or men’s category, the United States women’s national team captain, Megan Rapinoe, also won the Ballon d’Or 2019 women’s category award for her success in leading the 2019 Women’s World Cup championship.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker won the Yashin Trophy for the World’s Best Goalkeeper award. The success was inseparable from the large contribution to fix Liverpool’s defense since coming from AS Roma in the summer of 2018.

Alisson was instrumental in bringing Liverpool to the 2018-19 Champions League and the club only lost once in the Premier League last season.

“It is truly an honor to be with these great players, both men, and women,” Alisson said on the club’s official website.

“I want to thank my family, my wife, who always supports me wherever I go. For both parents in Brazil – I think they are watching me! And also to God who gave me an incredible 2019, Champions League trophy and some individual awards.”

“I do not feel the streak, I feel blessed and grateful. I also want to thank my teammates, the entire Liverpool staff. Thank you very much,” added Alisson who won the award defeating Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ederson.

The last award was in the category of Best Young Player under the age of 21, Kopa Trophy, which was won by Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch defender took Ajax Amsterdam to last season’s Champions League semifinals and won the Eredivisie title before moving to Juventus.

De Ligt won the Kopa Trophy award which was won last year by PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) striker Kylian Mbappe.
