Former Liverpool Defender Reveals Virgil van Dijk’s weakness

DBasia.news – Former Liverpool defender Kolo Toure gives his assessment related to the weaknesses of Virgil Van Dijk.  According to Toure, Van Dijk was weak in a one-on-one duel situation.

Van Dijk was transformed into one of the best defenders in the world since joining Liverpool in January 2018 ago.  He became a pillar of the success of Liverpool grabbed the 2018/2019 Champions League and 2019/2020 English League.

Rows of individual titles also stopped by this Dutch defender cabinet.  He became the Premier League’s best player last season and came second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or award.

Van Dijk is indeed regarded as a fairly complete central defender.  Not just good at suppressing opponents’ attacks, Van Dijk also has a crucial role in building Liverpool attacks.

He recorded an average accuracy of bait 82 percent and managed to package an assist in the Premier League this season.  In addition, Virgil Van Dijk is often able to become a deadlock breaker for the Reds.  He was shown with a score of five goals this season.

Even so, Kolo Toure assesses that there is one weak point from Van Dijk.  The former Liverpool defender said that Van Dijk was not very good in a one-on-one duel.

“He is an amazing player. He is a top player. He has speed, he can jump, he has technique and can change the direction of the match with a long pass. He has got everything,” Toure was quoted as saying by TalkSport.

“I have not seen many players dare to ask him to fight one on one. In my opinion, that is his weakness! He is very tall and if you really press him with the ball, he will be difficult.”

“He is very smart because he is able to retreat defensively well. However, if you are really aggressive in one-on-one situations, I think you can get something from him,” explained the man from Ivory Coast.

However, Kolo Toure’s opinion is actually not entirely correct if you view the statistics of Van Dijk in the English League this season.  Quoted from Opta, the percentage of Virgil Van Dijk’s success in winning the duel is quite high, reaching 74.7 percent.
