Lukaku Thinks About Resignation from Belgium National Team

DBasia.news – A football player usually decides to retire when he is already passed the golden moment, like 30 years old or more. Seeing this trend, it seems weird if there is a football player who resigned before that.

Usually, the player who retires from his own national team before the 30s has his own reason, like the injury or poor relationship with the football federation and coaching staffs. The same question also asked the Manchester United striker, Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium national team striker is only 25 and playing in two World Cup (2014 and 2018), also Euro 2016 since starting his debut in 2010. However, Lukaku made a surprising decision to his fans that he will retire from the Belgium national team in 2020 after the Euro. It means that he won’t play in the 2022 World Cup.

After the Euros, I think I’ll stop. I’m 25, I’m like, I’m not even in my prime yet,’ he said. ‘So I still see them as competition right now because they try to take my spot and I don’t want to give it up to them. ‘So like another two years, and then they can have it,” Lukaku said reported by Goal.

It’s interesting to hear Lukaku’s statement. Two years from now, he is 27, the golden age for Europe to football players. It would be unfortunate if Lukaku retires when he can still perform well at the high level and the 2022 World Cup.

The former Chelsea and Everton striker mentioned that the reason is to give the opportunity for the new generation, though in fact, Lukaku is still the leader of Belgium golden generation like Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne. However, anything could happen until the next 2 years. Lukaku can change his mind or insists to retire.

Lukaku played 75 caps with Belgium national team and scored 40 goals. If he retires, it means Lukaku will focus playing for The Red Devils who tied him in 5-year-contract since last year came from Everton.
