Manchester City Lost to the Promotion Team after Four Years
By db-admin
DBasia.news – The defending Premier League champion, Manchester City, has twice in a row swallowed defeat when they visited Carrow Road, the headquarters of Norwich City, in the continuation of week five of the Premier League, Saturday (9/14) PM.
Norwich City even took a 2-0 lead through goals scored by Kenny McLean (18 ‘) and Todd Cantwell (28’) before being reduced to 1-2 through Sergio Aguero’s goal in the 45th minute. In the second half, Norwich widened the distance through Teemu Pukki’s goal in minute 50 and City reduced it from Rodri’s goal in minute 88.
The Citizens lost for the first time this season and they are currently five points adrift of the top standings, Liverpool, who wiped out the first five games with a win (15 points). Pep Guardiola, Man City manager, congratulated Norwich.
“Congratulations to Norwich for how good they played. We don’t suffer much from the (opponent) side, Bournemouth created more chances against us. But in the end, we are not strong enough in the area of the penalty box. We learn from it,” said Guardiola in the Guardian.
“We know the quality of Norwich because they ‘destroyed’ the Championship last season. They have confidence while playing. In a few moments we did not play well. We have a chance to equalize, but in the end, congratulations to them.”
Pep Guardiola also does not blame his troops for the defeat. According to him, the Man City players, who wiped out all domestic titles last season, were only human.
“Nico (Nicolas Otamendi) didn’t really know that another player was coming and nobody told him. Sometimes, you know we made a mistake. I think sometimes we all forget these players are human,” stated Guardiola.
“Football is fast, things can go wrong and I have to see what I can do to help them. Five points are five points, but we are only in September. What should we do? Say ‘It’s September and congratulations to Liverpool, you are champions’? I don’t doubt my players at all.”
Manchester City for the first time also lost to the promotion team since March 2015 against Burnley – first also in the Pep Guardiola era. Previously, Man City have never lost in 25 matches, including 18 matches with Guardiola.
Here are some other records set at Carrow Road:
1. Teemu Pukki was involved in eight goals (six goals and two assists) in the first five Premier League matches. Only Sergio Aguero has scored more goals in competition history in the same number of matches (nine goals).
2. Manchester City conceded twice in the first round of the Premier League for the second time under the direction of Pep Guardiola, the last time going against Leicester City in December 2016.
3. Sergio Aguero became the third player to score in five Premier League matches after Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal 2004-05) and Wayne Rooney (Manchester United 2011-12).
4. Sergio Aguero has scored with seven strikes in the Premier League this season.
5. Norwich became the first team to win over Man City in the Premier League this season. So far, Norwich have scored 20 consecutive home goals in the Premier League – the best goal record at Carrow Road in 1963-1965 (38 matches).
