Story Behind Red and Blue in Barcelona Jersey

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Barcelona is identical to the red and blue colors on the jersey and both colors are the identity of the club.

The Blaugrana nickname itself also comes from these two colors in Catalan. Blau for blue and grana means deep red.

There are several theories that discuss the beginning of the selection of the two colors.

First, in line with the club’s history, the red and blue were chosen at a meeting of the founders of Barcelona in December 1899.

It was the second meeting after the declaration of the club’s founding a few weeks earlier.

It was Arthur and Ernest Witty who contributed greatly to the establishment of the club proposing to use the blue and red lines.

Both were inspired by a jersey from their school’s rugby team named Merchant Taylor in Crosby, a suburb of Liverpool.

Hans Max Gamper-Haessig or better known by the name of Joan Gamper as the founder of the club agreed to the proposal.

Previously he had used that color when playing for FC Basel.

This story was told by the descendants of the Barca founders and has been officially recognized by the club.

“The story of the family of the founders of the club is the most probable theory of why the club chose the two colors,” explained the club’s official statement.

“Someday there might be documents that confirm this theory. Until the time comes, we will support this theory as the most likely theory.”

There is another theory which says that the red and blue color was chosen by the mother of a player who was inspired by the ink colors used often used at that time.

The first theory is stronger considering the club’s global identity, according to the Barcelona founders who came from various countries such as England, Catalonia, Germany and Switzerland.

Barcelona are the first team in the Spanish League to use red and blue on their jersey.
