The Arrival of Vitor Matos as Team Development Coach in Liverpool

By db-admin

DBasia.news –  Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp confirmed the Portuguese coach, Vitor Matos, has officially joined Liverpool FC as a team development coach.

He moved to the Reds from FC Porto, where he served as assistant coach of Team B of the Portuguese club, who played in the country’s second division, in 2018-19.

It was Matos’s second season with Porto after spending two years in China, where he was the technical coordinator of the young players and U16 head coach for the Shandong Luneng team.

At Liverpool, the 31-year-old took the position previously held by the current assistant manager of the Reds, Pepijn Lijnders, who also switched to Merseyside from Porto.

Jurgen Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “We have a focus there. We have the idea that it needs to be done because we have so many wonderful young people.

“The situation is a bit like this: if you are in pre-season, they play with us and we need them to practice, for matches and all that. But then the season starts and all the main players and we don’t want to give them the feeling that they don’t get attention.

“So we think it makes sense that they really get a special coach again as Pep did many years ago when I came. I like the fact that I train with extraordinary assistant managers, but we need new people in their old positions.

“We have to fill in the blanks and we bring in a very great person, an extraordinary coach. Young and experienced, it’s not easy to find someone like him. Coaches who are used to doing six or seven training every day.

“He is smart, his English is very good – which is certainly important – and he has worked in a different club, but was educated in Porto, which is good for us because Pep is also from there.

“He already has a lot of experience and now we can all benefit from it. This will be good for young players.

“We must immediately introduce him to the young players, but he will do it today.”

Vitor – who holds the UEFA Elite Youth A License – previously gained a lot of experience in Porto between 2011 and 2016, taking various roles in various age groups.

That includes the role of head coaches at the U10, U12, and U14 levels, the position of assistant coaches at U15 and U17, and the opposing chief analysis for the U19 and Porto B.
