Alvaro Morata has a heavy burden on the Spanish national team
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Alvaro Morata performed poorly when Spain drew 0-0 against Sweden in the inaugural match of Group E of Euro 2020. As a result, the 28 year old striker had to be willing to accept a lot of criticism from various parties.
Morata is now carrying out the responsibility as the main striker for the Spanish national team. No wonder the La Furia Roja supporters has high expectations for him.
The problem is, these conditions affect Morata’s appearance on the field. It’s like carrying a very heavy burden.
The effect was seen in the match against Sweden. Having many golden opportunities, none of which was able to be converted into goals by Morata.
Morata admits that various criticisms have also affected his mental state. He even had to consult a psychologist to avoid depression.
“In sports, people don’t realize the importance or severity of anxiety and depression. It doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, not only in football, but in all aspects of life,” Morata told UEFA’s official website.
“It is something that has no name, has no form, but exists. I advise people to go to a specialist if they have a problem.”
Spanish National Team Striker’s Burden
Being a Spanish national team striker is a pretty heavy burden. If they appear badly, the fans and the state media themselves are ready to shower criticism.
When winning two European Cup titles (2008 and 2012) and the 2010 World Cup, Spain had two sharp bombers in Fernando Torres and David Villa. Both are also supported by creative midfielders like Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.
After the era of the two players ended, the burden as a striker for the Spanish national team became even higher. Diego Costa who appeared sharp with Chelsea alone was not able to carry it.
Costa’s appearance with Spain is often criticized by fans. This is in line with the poor performance of the Matador team at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.
Morata is now in Costa’s position. But he still has the opportunity to answer criticism against him.
Moreover, Morata still has the full support of Luis Enrique and his teammates in the Spanish national team. This becomes valuable capital to rise.
“I’m not going to just sit there all week. I am here and I will give my all,” continued Morata.
“In the end, the game moved so fast you don’t have time to think. I don’t take it as a serious mistake against Sweden.”
