Argentina will not host the Copa America

By db-admin

DBasia.news – The South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) took the decision to drop Argentina as the host of the 2021 Copa America. This has made the fate of the international tournament in South America even more unclear.

Initially, the Copa America, which was held from June 13 to July 10, would be held in Argentina and Colombia. However, the two countries could not be the host for their own reasons.

First, Colombia was deprived of its hosting rights after rising political intensity in the country. There was a big protest against the president Ivan Duque. As a result, due to security, CONMEBOL revoked Colombia as the host of the Copa America.

The strange thing is, a few days later, it was Argentina’s turn to lose their status as host. The increasing number of Covid-19 cases is suspected as the cause. According to records, Argentina occupies the fifth position as the country with the highest Covid-19 cases.

“CONMEBOL informs that in light of the current circumstances, the parties concerned have decided to suspend the holding of the Copa America in Argentina,” CONMEBOL wrote on Twitter.

Now, CONMEBOL is pressed for time to find a new host considering the start of the tournament schedule is getting closer. In fact, there are reports that the Copa America may be postponed.

“CONMEBOL is currently evaluating offers from other countries showing interest in hosting this tournament,” continued CONMEBOL.

Other news mentions Chile and Peru as the two strongest candidates to host the 2021 Copa America. In addition, there is also the issue of shifting the Copa America to the United States.
