Atalanta captain wants to Face Messi

DBasia.news – Atalanta is undergoing a Cinderella story in their debut season in the Champions League. The captain, Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez even dared to dream of bringing the Nerazzurri to the final to challenge Barcelona.

Atalanta has been one of the surprises in the Champions League this season. A debutant status, the club from Bergamo is now one of four clubs that have already secured a place in the quarter-finals.

This achievement is not achieved by mere luck. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team is able to pass through the obstacles of more experienced clubs like Valencia.

Atalanta’s appearance also impressed Pep Guardiola. The Manchester City manager claimed the game of Gomez and his colleagues were good to watch.

“We touched the sky, felt for ourselves a unique and historical moment for our club and city. If we get to the final, I hope we can compete with Barcelona because I want to be able to duel against Lionel Messi,” Gomez told Tyc Sports.

“I hope so because I realize our playing style. Atalanta can perform much better if playing against a Spanish team, not England or Germany.”

Gomez claimed to be confident with the chances of Atalanta to advance to the final. UEFA’s plan to change the format of the corona virus pandemic effect tournament is the reason.

Quarter-finals until the Champions League final is planned to be held with a single match system in a neutral place. The final decision on this matter will be announced on June 17.

“Now we are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. To be honest, we are fit, with a one-leg system because everything can happen in 90 minutes,” he added.

Competition to win the Champions League this season is more open. The delay in the competition since last March has made each team start the season all over again.
