Barcelona Presidential Candidate’s Promise Ahead of Election: I Will Make Lionel Messi Stay

By db-admin

DBasia.news – The candidate for President of Barcelona, Victor Font, is optimistic that he can convince Lionel Messi to stay at the Camp Nou. La Pulga has recently been rumored to be leaving for PSG or Real Madrid.

Messi’s future continues to be in discussion after the star asked to be released following a conflicted 2019-20 season.

Messi is rumored to be reuniting with his former coach, Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before deciding to stay in Spain.

Font is running for Barcelona’s presidential election which will take place on January 24, 2021 following the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu in October.

Font promises to try hard to keep Lionel Messi and will build a competitive squad to convince him.

“I believe that with a competitive, exciting long-term project, and especially in the case of Messi, who can go beyond his retirement day, we will convince him to stay,” Font told ESPN.

“Messi is the best player in the history of the number one sport in the world. Imagine what that means.”

“For that reason, the Messi-Barca relationship is a strategic one and we must do everything possible to ensure the relationship lives on.”

“Given he can speak with other clubs in January, contacting Messi should be one of the priorities,” said Font.

Font insisted that Messi’s new contract would be the top priority, even though Barcelona was hit by the financial crisis due to the corona virus. “Messi, above all, is a person who loves Barca and what he wants is to win.”

“Of course, the best player in the world and the best of all time must be compensated competitively. But, I think his priority is to compete and win.”

“(The salary) is one of those realities that must be adjusted. The level of income in the short term and for next season will continue to increase. It depends on what happens with the fans back at the stadium,” added Font.

“Based on that, we will arrange the salary accordingly. Once we are clear about the situation; we will know what the club can do.”

Messi has scored four goals in ten appearances in LaLiga this season and has scored a total of seven goals in all competitions.
