DBasia.news – Roberto Firmino showed his maximum contribution to Liverpool, even though only as a substitute. He further emphasized his status as a supersub mainstay of the Reds manager, Jurgen Klopp.
In the first leg of the last 16 which took place at the Giuseppe Meazza, Thursday (17/2) morning WIB, Liverpool beat Inter with a score of 2-0. Firmino scored the opener in the 75th minute.
Firmino is starting to lose his place in Liverpool’s main squad. It could not be separated from his performance which began to decline after suffering a series of injuries.
Firmino’s situation got more challenging as Diogo Jota replaced his role well. The Portuguese player became Liverpool’s new weapon through his role as a false nine.
Klopp again relied on Jota when they traveled to Inter’s headquarters. While Firmino started the match from the bench.
But the universe seems to support Firmino to shine in this match. Jota suffered an ankle injury and had to be withdrawn at half-time.
Klopp then entered Firmino as a substitute. Trust was finally paid off with the contribution of one goal.
Firmino has scored 11 goals while appearing as a substitute under Klopp. No players of the German manager has scored more goals in a similar role.
“Firmino needed time to get into the game. After scoring the goal you could see his confidence came back,” Klopp told BT Sport.
“Suddenly, the ball was our friend again and we won the game.”
Firmino has now scored 18 goals during his time in the Champions League. This amount makes him equal with the Brazilian legend, Ronaldinho.
The goal against Inter also has the opportunity to change Firmino’s fate. He is very likely to return to being a mainstay of Liverpool’s front line if Jota’s injury is more severe than imagined.
