Brighton made Liverpool Feel a Deja Vu at Anfield
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Deja vu or a same story happened to Liverpool again at Anfield. The incident occurred in the continuation of Week 22 of the Premier League against Brighton & Hove Albion, Thursday (04/02) am, WIB.
Liverpool as hosts at Anfield were favoured, but unexpectedly Brighton defeated the Reds 1-0 through a single goal scored by Steven Alzate in the 56th minute.
That goal was enough for Brighton to be completely defended until the end of the match. That can be seen with 36% versus 64% of Liverpool’s ball possession. Brighton fired four kicks on target from 13 experiments, while Liverpool had 11 but only one was on target.
No doubt Liverpool were made to feel the same way they did against Burnley some time ago at Anfield. Liverpool played a struggling team away from the relegation zone (as well as Brighton) and lost a surprisingly 0-1.
The difference at that time has made Burnley make a special record to stop Liverpool’s unbeaten record at 28 consecutive Premier League matches. Another similarity is to make the host unable to score goals.
According to Opta, Liverpool repeated the record in 1984. Not a good record but minor, namely the failure to score goals in three consecutive matches held at home games.
Liverpool played without Sadio Mane but Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri played, also with Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the second half. Brighton’s strong defense was also challenging to penetrate.
Brighton defender, Adam Webster has scored more balls than any other player against Liverpool (nine times), plus has won 100% of ball duels.
It did not stop there, Liverpool also for the first time since 2012 swallowed two consecutive defeats at Anfield in the league. Jurgen Klopp argued that his squad was not fit enough mentality against Brighton.
“We played against great opponents. For us it seems like this week was too difficult,” Klopp told BT Sport. “It looked like we were not mentally refreshed, so you cannot be physically ready.”
“They have good players, they deserve to win, that’s good, but we want to play better and be more convincing.”
“We lost too many balls in promising situations. I know they can play passes from ‘A’ to ‘B’, but tonight ‘B’ seems out of reach,” he explained.
This result is clearly not a good asset for Liverpool when they host Manchester City in Week 23 of the Premier League, Sunday (07/02) at 23.30 WIB.
