DBasia.newsThe former England national team midfielder Steve McManaman revealed his reason of leaving Liverpool to Real Madrid. Apparently, the Champions League was the main reason for McManaman.

Steve McManaman was the alumnus of Liverpool football academy. Played as the midfielder, McManaman had his debut in 1990-1991.

However, nine years later, Steve McManaman surprisingly left Liverpool. Moreover, he chose Real Madrid at that time.

Steve McManaman’s decision was surprising because there weren’t many British players who played outside their country, especially in Spain.

Besides, in the previous decade there were many British players failed in pursuing the career abroad. Let’s say Ian Rush, Denis Law, and Paul Gascoigne.

Apparently, Liverpool’s failure in the Champions League was the reason behind Steve McManaman’s decision to accept Real Madrid. Moreover, Los Blancos were the most successful club in that competition.

“I wanted to play in the Champions League, so to win it in my first Real Madrid season was brilliant,” Steve McManaman remembered his moment when asked by BolaSkor.com during the LaLiga press conference.

“Besides, I wanted to learn the different culture and language by joining Real Madrid. I want to step outside the comfort zone.”

“I have the ambition to play against the world’s greatest player. The only way is by performing in the Champions League. Hence I decide to join Real Madrid, the best club of the century,” Steve McManaman added.

The decision to join Real Madrid was appropriate. Steve McManaman won the Champions League trophy during his first season with Los Merengues.
