Chelsea Explains the Reasons for Co-Founding the European Super League
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Chelsea is one of seven founders of the European Super League to have left the competition. The Blues finally revealed their reasons for joining the project.
Chelsea along with five other Premier League clubs chose to withdraw from the European Super League just two days after the Champions League match was released. Massive protests by supporters played an important role behind this decision.
Club officials were considered to have disrespected their supporters and their history because they intend to leave UEFA competition. Moreover, their background is only money.
Chelsea has admitted their mistake. However, the London club has strong reasons for wanting to take the decision to get involved in the European Super League.
“Our ambition has always been to make Chelsea the best club in the world, both on the pitch and in the way we work, and give back to the community outside it. The joint decision to join ESL was driven by the same ambition,” wrote an official Chelsea statement.
“When it becomes clear that a new league may be formed, we don’t want Chelsea FC to lose the opportunity to play in a league that has such potential to stand out. We don’t want to risk the Club falling behind our closest rivals in England and Europe in terms of competition.”
From this explanation, Chelsea seemed to be going along with it. They did not think about the impact in the future.
However, Chelsea officials finally felt that that their decision was wrong. This cannot be separated from the swift wave of protests carried out by supporters, including ahead of the match against Brighton & Hove Albion, Wednesday (21/4).
“The club took a step back to listen and talk to the supporters. After this conversation and considering the very strong views on the proposal, we reviewed our initial decision and decided that we do not want to take part in this league,” continued Chelsea’s statement.
Tuchel’s response
Chelsea’s withdrawal from the European Super League was greeted enthusiastically by Thomas Tuchel. He admitted that the focus of his squad was disturbed because of this problem.
“I was a little upset, angry, impatient and completely out of focus as usual on game days. It was a strange feeling and I couldn’t really get rid of it during the game,” said Tuchel.
“I don’t watch TV, the news or any football. That’s very unusual for me.”
