Chelsea Is Not Brighton & Hove Albion
By db-admin
DBasia.news – In the history of his coaching career, Graham Potter has never coached big clubs. These clubs include Leeds Carnegie, Ostersund, Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion.
It was with the last club that Potter (47 years old) was famous for being able to turn Brighton into a dark horse team, a team that also often tackled the steps of top clubs in England. Chelsea saw it and signed him to replace Thomas Tuchel.
Potter was for the first time to coach a big club in his career. His debut began with a 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg in the Champions League. But that’s just the beginning and the players are still trying to understand the philosophy of football that Potter is trying to bring.
Coaching Brighton and Chelsea will be different for Potter. If at Brighton Potter did not have big demands to be champions, then it became a must at Chelsea with a squad of star and experienced players.
No doubt a good performance is not enough for Potter if he wants to maintain his existence at Chelsea. Good performance or not will not be important if the team is successful in winning trophies.
The warning was also given by former Liverpool and Chelsea coach, Rafael Benitez. According to Benitez, Potter must be able to convince management he is the right person for a long-term project by achieving success.
“He (Potter) has to win (champion). Now there’s no time for ‘Oh we played good football for six months’ and after winning nothing. It happens to most teams. ‘But we played good football. ‘ What have you won? ‘Nothing.’ That’s it, carry on,” said Benitez, quoted by Football London.
“I like being competitive and to win Graham Potter now has to go to a team that has to win, has to be in the top four, has to challenge for trophies and everyone is going to demand it.”
“Playing good football and finishing ninth, great achievement but now you have to win and you have to compete with Manchester City, they have money, Liverpool, they have money, Manchester United. Arsenal or Tottenham. I think it will be more demanding for him and he has the knowledge, can he manage the pressure? We’ll see.”
As a coach who has coached mid-table teams as well as big teams, Benitez also gives advice to Potter in order to cope with the pressure that comes.
“The first thing I would say is he did and did a great job. When you have a great idea and they give you time then maybe you can develop something. The environment is good for him but at the same time, and I always use Getafe’s example, there are too many teams like Getafe in the comfort zone,” added Benitez.
“The difference between finishing 10th and 11th is okay, between eighth and 15th maybe you don’t have a problem and you can play the style you want, if you lose it doesn’t matter because there is the next game pressure and hopefully he will do well. because I like it,” he explained.
