Community Shield History, Pro-Amateurs Competition

By db-admin

DBasia.news – It has become a tradition of English football a week before the Premier League was held a match titled Community Shield. The match that brought the Premier League champions against the FA Cup champions.

For the 2020-21 season, the match will be held at Wembley Stadium, Saturday (29/8). Liverpool, who are Premier League champions, will face Arsenal, the FA Cup winners. Lag last season.

Community Shiels was originally called Charity Shield and was first held in 1908. This event was the result of the development of the Sheriff of London Shield competition which was initiated by Sir Thomas Dewar, a businessman and politician from Scotland. This match was first held in 1898.

The Sheriff of London Shield pits top professional clubs against top amateur clubs as a charity match. However, this title only lasted nine years. In 1908, the FA then formed a special championship to replace the Sheriff of London Shield which was named Charity Shield.

At the first title of the Charity Shield, Manchester United, who won the Premier League, defeated Queens Park Rangers, who came to be champions of the Southern League, by a score of 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. This match is a repeat because in the first duel the two teams drew 1-1.

Over time, the concept of this event continues to change. Until finally this match became an event that brought together the competition winners against the FA Cup winners in 1921. At that time, Tottenham Hotspur won after beating Burnley 2-0.

In that period, the Charity Shield was still not prestigious. The match was played from different places. Until finally, Edgar Alfred “Ted” Croker took the initiative to play at Wembley Stadium, which was still called Empire Stadium, to welcome the arrival of the new season.

Regarding the match itself, this event has known a joint champion if the match ends in a draw. The last time that won the joint title was Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in 1991.

After that, the joint champion system was removed. If there is a draw, the match will be followed by a penalty shootout without extra time.

Despite the changes, the initial concept of this event was still a charity match, as the name implies, the Charity Shield. From 1974 to 2000, more than £ 5 million went to charity.

However, in 2002 the Charity Commission for England and Wales or the Charity Commission of England and Wales found an oddity. The commission said the FA failed to fulfill its obligations under charity law because it did not determine how much money from ticket sales would be donated. Not only that, the FA also often delays payments to selected charities. As a result, the Charity Shield changed to the Community Shield in 2002. Arsenal became the first winners of the Community Shield by beating Liverpool 1-0.

Speaking of success, Manchester United is still recorded as collecting the most titles with 20 titles. Followed by Liverpool and Arsenal with 15 trophies.
