Danish Players who has Defended Barcelona

By db-admin

DBasia.news –  Barcelona officially brought in a players from Leganes, Martin Braithwaite. Braithwaite is the fifth Danish player to defend the Blaugrana throughout history.

The 28-year-old became the first Danish player of the century to arrive at Camp Nou. Braithwaite followed in the footsteps of Michael Laudrup, Allan Simonsen, Thomas Christiansen, and Ronnie Ekelund.

The last Danish player to play for Barcelona was Ekelund. The midfielder who was born in Glostrup came to team B and only played a few minutes for the first team during the LaLiga match against Racing Santander on March 19, 1994. At that time Ekelund came on for Jose Mari Bakero.

Among other Danish players, Laudrup is one of the most iconic Danish players in history. He became the idol of Camp Nou from 1989 to 1994. During those five years, Laudrup helped Barca win four LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups, one Champions League – the first for Barcelona -, and one European Super Cup.

After scoring 40 goals in 165 matches, Laudrup joined Real Madrid, where he played for the next two seasons. The move is a wound that is still felt in Barcelona.

The first Danish-born player to play for Barcelona was Simonsen. He arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach in 1980 after winning the Ballon d’Or. Simonsen became the best after defeating Kevin Keegan and Michel Platini in 1977.

Simonsen played 116 matches for Barcelona and scored 40 goals. He was credited for bringing Barca to the Copa del Rey under Tente Sanchez, as well as winning the European Cup in 1982.

Another Danish player at Barca is Thomas Christiansen. This player was born in Copenhagen while his mother is Spanish. Which allowed him to have a dual citizenship.

The striker’s position attracted the attention of several big European clubs when playing for the Boldklubben youth team in 1983. In the end, Barcelona was able to recruit him and play in B. Christiansen team and then was loaned to Sporting Gijon, Osasuna and Racing Santander before spending the 1995-96 season at the Blaugrana first team, although barely played.

He managed to get a few minutes during the European Super Cup final against Werder Bremen. The lack of play allowed him to move to Real Oviedo, Villarreal and Terrassa before leaving Spain.

Due to his dual citizenship, Christiansen strengthened the Spanish U-21 national team 11 times and twice with the senior national team that was then directed by Javier Clemente.
