DBasia.news – Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, has finally come out of a bad record when it comes to dealing with penalties. De Gea made an important save when Man United faced West Ham United.
Manchester United brought home three points from West Ham headquarters after winning 2-1 in the 2021-2022 Premier League match, at London Stadium, Sunday (20/9). However, the match did not go easy for the Red Devils troops.
In fact, West Ham took the lead in the 30th minute through Said Benrahma’s action. Then, five minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo scored to make it 1-1.
Former West Ham player now back at Manchester United, Jesse Lingard emerged as the visitors’ hero after scoring a late goal (89′).
However, the star of the match was not only Lingard, but also De Gea. The reason is, the goalkeeper made Man United still bring home the three points after saving the Hammers penalty kick towards the end of the match.
West Ham received a penalty kick after Luke Shaw touched the ball with his hand in the restricted area. After the referee discussed with the assistant and used VAR, West Ham finally got a penalty.
Mark Noble, who had just entered in the second half, advanced as the executor. He fired quite hard into the center. However, De Gea was just as brilliant by reading the direction of the ball well.
Finally, the ball did not penetrate Man United’s goal.
Opta Joe noted, De Gea previously conceded 40 penalties-including through penalty shootouts-in various events. The last time the goalkeeper saved a penalty kick was in 2016.
As a result, De Gea finally decided the curse of the penalty shootout. After the match, the goalkeeper seemed to have received a special appreciation from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Now, Manchester United is in third place in the Premier League standings with 13 points. The Red Devils’ gains are the same as the first and second ranks, which were occupied by Chelsea and Liverpool respectively.
