David De Gea’s Blunder Caused Criticism

By db-admin

DBasia.news – One strange blunder was made by David De Gea when Manchester United eliminated Everton from the 2022-2023 FA Cup. However, this moment did not make the Spanish goalkeeper be criticized.

In the match that took place at Old Trafford, Saturday (7/1), Manchester United defeated Everton with a score of 3-1. This result made the Red Devils qualify for the fourth round.

Manchester United showed superiority in this game. Three goals for the hosts were scored by Antony (4′), an own Conor Coady (52′) and Marcus Rashford’s penalty (90+7′).

Meanwhile, Everton were only able to reply once through Coady’s flick. But the Toffees goal tarnished De Gea’s reputation as one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

The goal scored by Coady was inseparable from the fatal mistake made by De Gea. The 32-year-old goalkeeper was careless in anticipating Neal Maupay’s cross kick from a tight angle.

De Gea, who stood at the goal post, failed to secure the situation. The ball actually hit his foot and then rolled behind himself to be greeted by Coady.

Roy Keane was one of the people who harshly criticized De Gea’s blunder. The former Manchester captain compared it to a comedy.

“It was a shocking mistake from an international goalkeeper. De Gea at that moment was like Carry On (British comedy series) football,” Roy Keane told ITV.

“It looks like the goalkeeper was sent out and the outfielder became the goalkeeper. He didn’t know what to do!”

De Gea actually started to return to his best performance since Erik ten Hag became manager. His status as Manchester United’s main goalkeeper has not been shifted even though his playing style is said to be outdated.

But the blunder against Everton seemed to be a hard slap for De Gea. Moreover, he is known to be capable of using both feet to block opponent shots.

“We’re talking about a goalkeeper who was recently called one of the best with his feet. I don’t know what happened there,” Ian Wright stated.
