Diego Simeone’s Disappointment
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Atletico Madrid are certain to end the 2022-2023 Champions League group stage with the status of caretaker.
Atletico lost 1-2 when they traveled to FC Porto’s headquarters in the last group B match at the Estadio do Dragao, Wednesday (2/11). This result made Los Rojiblancos drop to the bottom of the standings as they were overtaken by Bayer Leverkusen even though they both had 5 points.
By finishing in fourth place, Atletico certainly failed to get down to the Europa League caste. Their journey in European competition this season has certainly stopped.
This result is somewhat surprising as Atletico are not included in the Hell group. The last time the Spanish capital club had a similar bad experience was in 2007.
Simeone was frustrated by this failure. He highlighted the mental factor of his players.
“We conceded goals in almost every game. We scored less and almost all the teams were better than us,” Simeone told Diario AS.
“We ended up where we deserved and accepted reality. From there, another phase starts tomorrow.”
Together with Simeone, Atletico is known as one of the most dangerous dark horses in Europe. He even brought his team to the final twice.
This failure could be a sign of Simeone’s fortune starting to fade. Moreover, Atletico is still strengthened by a number of quality players.
“You can have talent, play well, be great physically, but if you are not emotionally calm and confident it limits you. Let’s see if we have a lot of guys in this group to deal with it,” he added.
Atletico’s performance has not been optimal this season. Antoine Griezmann often loses concentration so he often concedes at the beginning and end of the game.
But Simeone isn’t surrendering. He still believes he can bring Atletico back on the right track.
“Together, being clear about what we want and getting everyone involved. That is the best way to face challenges.”
