Don’t Set Your Expectations Too High for Manchester United Star Jadon Sancho
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Jadon Sancho is considered to have failed to look stunning since wearing Manchester United because he is too burdened with big expectations.
There is no doubting the quality and experience of Varane and Ronaldo, especially since they both had success at Real Madrid. Heaton also came in as the third goalkeeper for David De Gea and Dean Henderson.
Different from the three, hopes and expectations are pinned to Sancho who is only 21 years old. United spent up to 85 million euros to sign him from Borussia Dortmund after a long search for him.
With his form of creating chances, scoring goals and bringing creativity to Dortmund, Sancho is expected to do the same. But the facts say otherwise.
Sancho has made 23 appearances this season with a record two goals without an assist. Compare that to last season when he provided 20 assists and scored 16 goals in 38 games for Dortmund. So, what’s up with Sancho?
Sancho indeed has an English passport, but it is also worth remembering that this is his first season playing in the first team at Premier League level, because previously Sancho was a product of the Man City academy who immediately migrated to Germany.
“Hard to say, I think it’s because it’s a different league and different competition, it’s more physical,” said Ralf Rangnick of Sancho’s struggles in England.
That’s plus the fact Sancho needs to adapt again to United’s game, which changed coaches from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Rangnick. Another factor is different expectations.
Sancho came to Dortmund without many people knowing him as nothing more than a talented young man. Dortmund also does not put pressure on him as much as at Man United, which every season is targeted to win a trophy.
“I think it also has to do with a lot of different things in his head,” Rangnick added.
“There is a difference when you come as an 18-year-old, unknown, talented English player to Borussia Dortmund. From then on, you can only improve, you can only succeed from it.”
“The level of expectation is much lower compared to the situation when, at the age of 21, you come to a club like Manchester United for a high transfer fee, with high expectations.”
“Everyone expects from him that he will become one of the best players in the team. Again, this is a more challenging psychological, emotional situation than the one he experienced at Borussia Dortmund, and this is a step he has to take to become a top player during his career. The next 10 years for this club.”
With these factors, Rangnick, who has also coached Schalke and RB Leipzig and knows German football culture, knows Sancho’s style of play, continues to give him confidence to find the same performance as when he was defending Dortmund.
“Every time I see him in training he shows that he is one of the best players in training,” Rangnick added.
“But now it’s about transferring that when he’s playing and showing the same level and performance on the pitch.”
“By the way, I told him that the day before yesterday. ‘Confirm the performances you show in training when you play on the pitch’.”
“When he starts doing that the confidence will flow and this will help him keep going. Then, it’s about keeping that progress.”
“He has the ability to do that. There’s no doubt about that, but now we have to develop him into the kind of player he is, showing the same performances he showed at Borussia Dortmund.
“We can provide him with guidance, we can provide assistance to him and show him that we are trying to accompany him on this path and provide all the necessary assistance he needs, but ultimately it is up to him to take the next step.”
