FIFA President Intervenes in Responding to the Controversy of the European Super League

DBasia.news – The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, finally opened his voice about the formation of the European Super League by 12 top European clubs. According to him, these clubs must accept the consequences for the actions taken.

The new chapter of the European Super League conflict continues. After previously making many statements with the tone of rejection, now it is FIFA’s turn.

Gianni Infantino who was present at the UEFA congress also discussed the European Super League. Gianni Infantino emphatically rejected the formation of the European Super League.

“At FIFA, we can only balk at the formation of the European Super League which is a closed shop, separate from the current institutions, from the league, association, UEFA and FIFA,” Gianni Infantino told UEFA social media.

The chairman of the European Super League, Florentino Perez, explained that the competition was made for the common interest. One of them is covering the club’s losses due to the corona virus pandemic. Perez promised more money than following the Champions League or Europa League.

Perez’s statement was considered by Gianni Infantino to only be a short-term solution. The president asked club owners to make decisions wisely.

“There are a lot of things that have to be thrown away for short-term financial gain for some people. People need to think very carefully. They need to reflect and take responsibility.”

“If some choose to go their own way, they have to live with the consequences of the choice. They have to be responsible for their choice. In concrete terms, that means you can’t be in the middle,” the president commented.

European Super League format

The European Super League is expected to have at least 20 clubs participating. Later, the 20 clubs will be divided into two groups, each of which will play matches with a home-away system.

The following is the format of the European Super League:

1. Followed by 20 participating clubs, 15 of which are founders who are permanent members of the competition. Meanwhile, the other five teams must pass the qualification mechanism and fulfill the requirements based on the achievements of the previous season.

2. Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs competing in their respective domestic leagues, maintaining the traditional domestic match calendar that remains at the heart of the club’s journey.

3. The participants will be divided into two groups (each group contains 10 teams). Every team in the same group will meet each other with an away home system.

4. The top three teams in each group get a ticket to the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, the four teams in the fourth and fifth places will play a play-off match to fight for the two remaining top eight tickets.

5. The quarter-finals and semifinals are held in two legs like the knockout stages in the Champions League. After that, the finals took place once at a neutral venue.
