Gianluigi Buffon Admits That Manchester United Created Trauma
By db-admin
DBasia.news – A surprising confession was delivered by Gianluigi Buffon. The Juventus goalkeeper admitted that he had suffered from prolonged trauma by Manchester United.
Throughout his career, Buffon has repeatedly faced Manchester United. However, there is only one meeting with the Red Devils that he has not forgotten until now.
The moment in question is Buffon’s meeting against Manchester United in the last 16 of the 2018-2019 Champions League. At that time the goalkeeper strengthened the French giants, Paris Saint-Germain.
In the second leg, Buffon made a fatal blunder which resulted in the net being conceded. He failed to perfectly catch Marcus Rashford’s hard kick so that the rebound was able to be continued by Romelu Lukaku.
The mistake was ultimately fatal. PSG had to be eliminated after Manchester United won 3-1 or won the aggressiveness of the away goals because at Old Trafford they only lost 0-2.
“It was a game that I was thinking about at least three or four times a week. That moment caused a lot of regret, because I’m sure we will reach the final,” Buffon told L’Equipe.
“In Manchester, we won big games showing off great strength, and unfortunately I blame myself for an incredible mistake.”
The blunder tarnished Buffon’s reputation as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. No wonder many suspect that the former Parma player will retire at the end of the season.
Apart from making blunders, Buffon admitted that his team underestimated Manchester United at the time. The victory at home to the opponent does make Les Parisiens only need a draw to qualify.
“I think the game is just a formality as if it was worthless because we won 2-0 in the first leg. On the other hand, they are unlucky because they only have two players available and nine young players,” he concluded.
