Hector Bellerin heads to Real Betis after looking at the stats

“I applied big data when deciding which club was best for me this pre-season, based on the way I played, the type of manager and Betis were one of the top teams that came out top because of the way the manager likes to use the full-backs and the team trajectory for the season,” explained Bellerin to La Media Inglesa.

Statistics have always been Bellerin’s main benchmark in determining a career and also sees many things, including measuring self-ability.

“I don’t know what people will think, but the projection given to me by the big data is that Betis will have a great year this season, so you can see how this machine works,” said Bellerin.

“I’ve used it a lot for this kind of thing, I think the stats show everything but sometimes it’s not the most important thing either. I feel that in some ways, a player can affect the game in ways that cannot be quantified.”

Statistics and data have helped Bellerin develop his game, as well as see the shortcomings that can be corrected in order to perform even better.

“I often use big data to look at the physical side of the game, to see if I’m still heading in the right direction, to see if there are games where I’m running less and why?” Bellerin added.

“In the end, you can try and to improve your game a little bit by doing it. Numbers are important and a good help for managers and players, to develop, but football is more fluid than numbers and you have to look at the effect a player has on the pitch from a wider perspective,” he explained.
