If There Was VAR, Sulley Muntari’s Goal on Juventus in 2012 Should’ve Been Legal

DBasia.news – Former Serie A referee, Paolo Tagliavento, admitted that if there was VAR, he could avoid the mistakes he made when he was a referee. Tagliavento also mentioned he had five mistakes during refereeing.

Tagliavento did not describe in detail the five mistakes. He only mentioned the Sulley Ali Muntari ghost goal incident being one of them.

Serie A lovers, especially supporters of Juventus and AC Milan will certainly not forget the incident in question. Tagaliaavento had ruled out Muntari’s goal when AC Milan hosted Juventus at the San Siro in a 2012 Serie A match.

At that time, the ball headed Muntari was clearly seen crossing the Juventus goal line before being pushed over by Gianluigi Buffon. But Tagliavento did not endorse it, making the Italian football noisy.

Tagliavento admitted that he could not do much in the Muntari ghost goal incident. He only regretted that VAR and goal-line technology were not implemented.

“If I have VAR, it will allow me to avoid the five worst mistakes of my career,” Tagliavento told Radio Punto Nuovo.

“Muntari’s goal is my most obvious mistake and will now be resolved in a tenth of a second with technology.”

Interestingly, Tagliavento was antipathy with the presence of technology in football. But that view changed with the positive impact he felt directly on the ground.

“My last season in Serie A was the first time I used VAR. I am among the most skeptical, because I have been a referee for 30 years and have many doubts about this technology,” he added.

“However, this assumption only lasts until the middle of the season. I realize the great potential of this instrument, which is very necessary today.”

Tagliavento has served as the main referee for Serie A for the past 14 years. He retired at the end of the 2017-2018 season.
