DBasia.news – The European Super League saga has finally come to an end. The nine founding clubs including AC Milan and Inter Milan were confirmed to be biting their fingers after UEFA agreed to impose sanctions under a program they call “reintegration measures”.
On April 18, 12 major European clubs established the European Super League, which is a competition against the Champions League. These clubs are, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.
Money is the main reason behind the European Super League. However, UEFA is reluctant to acknowledge this competition because it is considered to injure the values of sportsmanship.
UEFA even threatened severe sanctions for clubs and players participating in the competition. Supporters of each club also disapproved of the European Super League and staged demonstrations.
These conditions made the nine founders of the European Super League cancel their participation and return to submit to UEFA. They are the six Premier League representatives plus Atletico, Inter and Milan.
Meanwhile, three other teams, namely Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are still determined to carry out this competition. They also refuse to bow back to UEFA.
Despite their return, the nine clubs from the former European Super League founders did not escape UEFA sanctions. They will lose five percent of the revenue from their participation in the Champions League or Europa League.
“The nine clubs acknowledge and accept that the Super League project was a mistake and apologize to fans, national associations, national leagues, fellow European clubs and UEFA. They have also acknowledged that the project will not be endorsed under the UEFA Statutes and Rules,” it said. UEFA’s official statement.
“The clubs have committed to and will participate in every Club Competition under UEFA. They have also ceased involvement in the company set up to operate the Super League.”
“The club will face a fine of 100 million euros if they try to play in another unofficial tournament such as the Super League,” the statement continued.
The Fates of the Three Other Clubs
UEFA also will not remain silent with the attitude of three other clubs that have not left the European Super League. Heavier sanctions have been put in place to make them give up.
“UEFA has all the right to take any action it deems appropriate against clubs which have so far refused to leave the Super League. The matter will be referred to UEFA’s competent disciplinary body immediately,” concluded the statement.
