Juventus Apologizes for Racist Content
By db-admin
DBasia.news – One of the content uploaded by Juventus on social media was accused of being racist. The Bianconeri immediately apologized.
Quoted from the Guardian, the Twitter account for the Juventus women’s team, JuventusFCWomen, uploaded a photo on their account on Thursday (5/8/2021). In the photo, defender Cecilia Salvai makes a squinting gesture.
Wearing a cone as a hat, Salvai narrowed his eyes by placing a finger on his temple and pulling it back.
An emoji was also added to the account, namely the left and right index finger emoji, flanking the emoji of people laughing until their eyes were closed.
The Juventus post was considered racist, because it seemed to mock the slanted eyes of Asians. US commentator Keith Olbermann has criticized it.
US sports commentator Keith Olbermann tweeted: “One more apology than the supposed “We apologize if YOU were offended”. This is blatant racism, Juventus. Admit it, sorry, sorry,” he tweeted.
It didn’t last long, only about 25 minutes, the upload was deleted by the Juventus women’s team account. An apology was also issued by the Bianconeri.
“We sincerely apologize that our tweets, which were not intended to cause controversy or have a racial undertone, may have offended anyone. Juventus has always been against racism and discrimination,” read a club statement.
The Juventus women’s team were the defending Serie A champions last season. The title is the fourth in a row won since the 2017/2018 season.
