DBasia.news – Manchester City lost 1-0 against Leicester City in the Community Shield event, at Wembley Stadium, Saturday (7/8). The Foxes’ only goal was created by Kelechi Iheanacho towards the end of the match.
Leicester City came with the status of champions of the last edition of the FA Cup after beating Chelsea in the top match. Youri Tielemans created the winning goal for The Foxes.
Meanwhile, Manchester City are the reigning Premier League champions. Last season, The Citizens were 12 points ahead of second place, Manchester United.
In this match, Pep Guardiola did not play all of his best players. Guardiola also did not play Jack Grealish since the start of the game. Understandably, a number of new players returned from the vacation period after appearing at the 2020 European Cup.
However, Man City kept pressing since the whistle sounded. Manchester City had the opportunity to open the scoring through Ilkay Gundogan’s action from the left corner in the 7th minute. However, Kasper Schmeichel was able to thwart it which made the ball hit the crossbar.
Man City again almost scored in the 16th minute. Caglar Soyuncu was wrong in anticipating the ball which led to his own goal. Luckily, the ball was thin over the bar.
Leicester again threatened the Man City defense through Jamie Vardy in the 18th minute. The striker’s volley kick made Zack Steffen struggle.
Ayoze Perez almost scored the opener in the match after getting a chance in the 23rd minute. Unfortunately, despite having space, the player’s shot was still too weak.
Towards the end of the first half, Leicester again spread threats. Vardy’s cross was struck by Harvey Barnes who grabbed it with his left foot. However, Steffen can still make a save. The score 0-0 lasted until the break.
Entering the 55th minute, Manchester City’s two forwards, Riyad Mahrez and Samuel Edozie, made a slick collaboration which was passed on to Gundogan. However, Gundogan’s effort that had space only bounced over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, it was Mahrez’s turn to score after Ricardo Pereira made a mistake. However, the former Leicester player’s left-footed shot was still not on target.
Pep Guardiola finally entered Jack Grealish in the 65th minute. The England national team player replaced Samuel Edozie.
The entry of Grealish brought a new color to the front lines of Manchester City. However, Leicester’s tight defense did not produce any goals.
However, when busy attacking, Manchester City forgot about the defense. Nathan Ake fouled Kelechi Iheanacho in the forbidden box in the 87th minute.
Iheanacho who advanced as a penalty taker did not waste opportunities. The Nigerian international striker fired into the top right corner. The score changed to 1-0.
The 1-0 score for Leicester lasted until the long whistle. Leicester also emerged as champions of the Community Shield.
