DBasia.news – It’s not Lionel Messi if he doesn’t break a record, like his rival Cristiano Ronaldo. La Pulga broke the record again at the 2021 Copa America.
Argentina confirmed the top position in Group A after a 4-1 win over Bolivia at the Pantanal Arena, Tuesday (29/06). Messi scored two goals and provided one assist, while the other two goals were scored by Papu Gomez and Lautaro Martinez.
With Messi playing in that match, he has already broken Argentina’s all-time record. According to Opta, the 34-year-old has the record for most appearances (caps) for the Argentine national team of all time belonging to Javier Mascherano.
Mascherano, who last played for Estudiantes in 2020, has 147 caps (three goals), while Messi has 148 caps and scored 75 goals in his career with Argentina which began in 2005.
So far according to @BarcaStat Messi also has good statistics: most goals (three), most assists (two), dribbles 21 times, most kicks on target (10 times), and accuracy of passes in the opponent’s defense (84 times).
The win was all the more special for Argentina, who extended their unbeaten run to 17 games (10 wins and seven draws) under Lionel Scaloni. It was the third longest unbeaten run for a coach, equal to Guillermo Stabile.
“I think about Messi, everything has been said. We are proud to have him and believe he will give us more happiness,” said Lionel Scaloni about Messi.
“We believe we can compete to the maximum extent possible with the whole team. We believe that this is the way to keep going,” he added.
The Argentine national team will face Ecuador in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Copa America at the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico, Sunday (04/07).
