Liverpool and Leicester have to compete hard for Champions League tickets
By db-admin
DBasia.news – When the title of the 2020-2021 Premier League champion has been owned by Manchester City and three relegated teams have been identified, the hunt for the two remaining Champions League tickets via the league route has become even more fierce.
Liverpool, who previously had doubts about being able to enter the top four after a series of minor results, suddenly got back up. In the last two Premier League matches, the Reds won 4-2 over Manchester United and 2-1 against West Bromwich Albion.
That puts them back in the race for the Champions League zone with two games to go. Jurgen Klopp’s men sit fifth in the standings with 63 points, behind Leicester City (66 points) and Chelsea (64 points).
Liverpool will travel to Burnley and host Crystal Palace in the remaining two games, while Leicester play at Chelsea headquarters and host Tottenham Hotspur in the last two matches, while Chelsea against Aston Villa (away) in the final game.
Anything can happen. Leicester can qualify for the Champions League Qualification with Chelsea or Liverpool, or Chelsea and Liverpool qualify then Leicester are eliminated to the Europa League zone (fifth).
However, among the many possible scenarios there is one interesting thing that will involve Leicester City and Liverpool.
Same Potential Points and Goal Difference between Leicester and Liverpool
With a record of scoring almost the same goals this season, Liverpool and Leicester who have +21 goal difference (Leicester are two goals ahead of Liverpool), there is a chance both of them finish in fourth with the points and also the same goal difference.
That can happen, for example: if Leicester lose 0-1 to Chelsea and then win 3-0 against Tottenham, then Liverpool win 3-2 against Burnley and 2-1 against Palace then their points and goal tally will be the same.
So what happens if that scenario occurs? Looking at the head to head record, there are few things that also differentiate the two teams.
Last November Liverpool won 3-0 over Leicester at Anfield, then in February they won 3-1 at the King Power Stadium. From that record, what could be the difference if the points and goal difference between the two teams are the same.
Quoted from the Mirror, the goal from Mohamed Salah at Leicester headquarters could be crucial for Liverpool to determine the position in the top four.
However, if the head to head record cannot separate the two clubs then the team that has scored the most away goals in both teams’ matches will secure a higher position.
Finally, if there are still no differences between the two clubs, then there is the potential for a play-off match to be played at a neutral venue with the format, time and stadium determined by the Premier League.
