Liverpool announce Cody Gakpo’s transfer
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Liverpool have finally confirmed the arrival of Cody Gakpo, who scored three World Cup goals for the Netherlands and has scored 12 goals in all competitions for PSV this season.
He will immediately fill in Liverpool’s attack line which is currently without Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino due to injury, while fitness issues and transfer interest from other clubs prompted the Reds to act immediately for the player.
Klopp has personally taken an interest in Gakpo for a long time and the club are believed to have hammered out a deal in just three days of talks with PSV, namely on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Liverpool are still outside the top four for now and are looking to compete with other clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle United who are expected to spend big in January. As for Anfield itself, it is believed that Gakpo has a contract that runs until 2028.
“I feel great, I am happy to be here,” Gakpo said in the statement. “I can’t wait to start training and start playing for this amazing club.
“I think it’s a great club for me and try to show what I can [do] as well as try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they have done in recent years.
“I think it’s also good for me personally to develop here and there are a lot of great players here [who] I can learn from.”
Gakpo can play from the left wing, as a number 10 striker under Jurgen Klopp.
Gakpo will be the first Dutch striker to feature for Liverpool in a Premier League game since Dirk Kuyt made his debut.
When the 23-year-old player is officially registered he will be looking to start playing as soon as possible, but the Reds will have to be careful about bringing him on after the World Cup.
Liverpool are hoping he can adapt quickly to start on January 21 against Chelsea, but it is too early to set a firm timeframe on his involvement in the team.
