DBasia.news – Manchester City started their work in the 2021-2022 season with less success. The Citizens failed to win the Community Shield trophy after being defeated by Leicester City.
The event that brought together the Premier League and FA Cup winners last season was presented at Wembley Stadium, Saturday (7/8). Leicester were surprisingly able to close the game with a narrow 1-0 win.
Manchester City was actually favoured despite appearing with many young players. Pep Guardiola’s team is also more in control of the game.
But Manchester City conceded in the last minute. The referee awarded a penalty to Leicester after Kelechi Iheanacho was fouled in the forbidden box.
Iheanacho who advanced as the executor successfully conquered Zack Steffen. The 24-year-old player did not celebrate his goal excessively as he was a former Manchester City player.
In the short time remaining, Manchester City failed to catch up. This result is certainly a bad start for the reigning Premier League champions.
Guardiola was disappointed with this defeat. But he did not feel disappointed with the game his players.
“I would be happy if I won the game. Congratulations to Leicester on winning the Community Shield,” Guardiola said after the game.
“Our form was great, especially for the start of the season and the way we played in the second half. The courage of the young players like Sam (Edozie) and Cole (Palmer) and the control we had because they only had long balls in the second half.”
Guardiola has not played a number of stars such as Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, to Ederson. Their conditions have not been ideal after appearing in the European Cup and Copa America.
Praising Leicester
Despite dominating the game, Guardiola did not forget to praise Leicester. The opponent is considered to have asserted themselves as a dark horse who is ready to make a surprise throughout this season.
“In recent years Leicester have always been there. Last season they were just one game away from qualifying for the Champions League.”
“Since winning the Premier League they have always been there. They are a tough opponent, a good quality manager and extraordinary players.”
Leicester’s contract match became Manchester City’s last test before fighting in the real event. Next week, they have to travel to Tottenham Hotspur’s headquarters in the 2021-2022 Premier League opener.
