DBasia.news – Manchester City remain at the top of the Premier League standings after a narrow 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium, Saturday (11/12) night WIB. City’s only goal was scored by Raheem Sterling in the 66th minute through the penalty spot. This was Sterling’s 100th goal in the Premier League.
Since the match began, host Manchester City immediately took control of the game by flowing the ball from foot to foot, from side to side. While Wolves are trying to compete with City by placing five players in midfield.
Wolves manager, Bruno Lage’s strategy of trying to condense the midfield seems to have succeeded in seeing the difficulty of City in flowing the ball into the attacking line. Even so, City was able to get a chance in the seventh minute. However, Joao Concelo’s hard kick was still soaring.
Three minutes later, it was Bernardo Silva’s turn to waste the opportunity. Receiving feedback from Concelo, Silva fired his left foot from outside the penalty box. However, like Concelo’s previous opportunity, Silva also only sent the ball over the bar.
City did not give Wolves an opportunity to develop the game. In the 15th minute, Jack Grealish received a cross from Raheem Sterling. But Grealish failed to complete the opportunity to become a goal.
In the 22nd minute, Cancelo made another long-distance experiment. This time Wolves goalkeeper, Josa Sa managed to secure his shot. Two minutes later, Wolves had their first chance through Raul Jimenez, but his header went wide to the right of City’s goal.
City again had a chance in the 39th minute. Aymeric Laporte managed to take advantage of a corner kick situation, but his header failed to reach the Wolves goal.
At the end of the first half, Jimenez received two yellow cards in the span of seconds. Jimenez received the first yellow card after breaking Rodri. Then when Rodri’s free kick was released, Jimenez deliberately interfered by blocking the ball. Inevitably the referee issued a second yellow card and Wolves had to play with ten players.
In the second half, against ten players, Manchester City intensified the pressure on the Wolves defence. But the hosts still haven’t managed to break into the Wolves’ goal.
City could actually have taken the lead in the 55th minute if Gundogan’s header was not blocked by Conor Coady on the goal line. Another opportunity came in the 59th minute, this time Sterling’s chance was blocked by Sa.
After half an hour of playing, City recorded 13 shots with possession of the ball reaching 70%. While Wolves only fired once.
Disaster came for Wolves in the 65th minute. Joao Moutinho was said to have touched the ball with his arm while blocking Silva’s cross. The referee’s decision wasconfirmed by VAR.
Raheem Sterling who became the executioner calmly carried out his duties. City lead 1-0. This is Sterling’s 100th goal in the Premier League.
Winning by one goal, the wave of City attacks was getting heavier. Jose Sa had to struggle to secure his goal several times. Like when thwarting Bernardo Silva’s chance in the 72nd minute. Sa again thwarted City’s chances. This time the Portuguese goalkeeper brilliantly blocked Gabriel Jesus’ kick.
Although the rest of the match continued to lock up the Wolves defense, Man City failed to add a goal. Thanks to this 1-0 victory, City still survives as the leader of the Premier League standings with a collection of 38 points from 16 matches played.
