DBasia.news – Manchester United competed sharply with Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium with the League Cup trophy at stake. Erik ten Hag and his team managed to win 2-0 on the day, with Casemiro opening his way to a first trophy in six years while an in-form Marcus Rashford appeared to be celebrating a goal shortly after, but the attempt was initially dismissed as being an own goal after hitting Newcastle defender, Sven Botman and into the roof of the net.
United have now confirmed that the goal had been credited to Rashford, with a statement on the club’s website reading: “Manchester United can confirm Marcus Rashford has been officially credited with the second goal in their League Cup final win over Newcastle United. The local forward took advantage of a pass from Wout Weghorst and fired a shot towards goal, soon after Casemiro had opened the Reds’ lead.
“The ball was deflected by Sven Botman and past debutant keeper Loris Karius and was originally listed as an own goal, although it appears to have been Rashford’s goal, as he did his trademark celebration. However, the club have clarified that Rashford was indeed the scorer as his shot was deemed on target by various match officials at Wembley.
“This is the first time he has scored in a major final and a sweet moment, after his last appearance at the national stadium was the defeat on penalties in the Euro final against Italy.”
Rashford has now scored 25 goals for United in all competitions this season, his personal best, and he ended his League Cup campaign with six goals after finding the target in every half that followed.
As Rashford was awarded United’s second goal against Newcastle, Dutch striker, Wout Weghorst was credited with the assist.
