DBasia.news – Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford will receive an honorary doctorate title from The University of Manchester later this summer.

The title is the highest award that can be given by a university and Rashord is considered worthy for “an extraordinary campaign against child poverty outside the field and extraordinary sports achievements on the field.”

Last month Rashford successfully campaigned for the government to extend the free school food voucher scheme during the summer holidays and also helped lead an initiative with the charity, FareShare to raise funds to help supply food for children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the age of 22, Rashford will become the youngest recipient of the honorary title from the university and join Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton on the list who have received that honorary title.

“This is a proud day for me and my family. When you see the big names that have been given this title in the past, I feel honored,” said Rashford as reported by Sky Sports on Wednesday (7/15).

“We still have a long way to go to fight child poverty in this country, but receiving recognition from the city means we are heading in the right direction and that means a lot.”

During the lockdown period in the UK, Rashford collaborated with the charity for poverty and food waste, FareShare, a collaboration that raised £ 20 million in financial and food donations and allowed 3.9 million meals to be distributed to the country in the most vulnerable every week during this pandemic.

On June 15, he went further by writing an open letter to the British government and campaigning for this message on social media describing his personal experience having been helped by the free food stamps while he was still in school.
