DBasia.news – An unpleasant incident was experienced by Olympique Marseille’s squad. Andre Villas-Boas ‘team almost became the target of their own supporters’ anger.
Hundreds of Marseille supporters reportedly came to the training ground of their idol team on Saturday (30/1) local time, to protest. This is related to the minor results achieved by Les Olympians.
Marseille is only able to win one win from its last nine matches in all competitions. Dimitri Payet and his team mates also only occupied the caretaker position in the Champions League group phase.
Reporting from RMC Sport, around 200 Marseille supporters forced their way into the club’s training center. They also lit fireworks and burned a number of trees which made the situation tense.
The club director and president were the target of the Marseille supporters’ anger. Both are considered to be the culprits of the team’s poor performance in the 2020-2021 season.
As a result of this incident, a number of club facilities were damaged. Luckily, there were no fatalities even though the Marseille employees were traumatized.
“Olympique de Marseille strongly condemns the unacceptable attack on the club this afternoon inside the Robert-Louis Dreyfus training center. Several hundred people from the Ultra support group broke into the location of the training center, including the first team building by force,” wrote a statement from Marseille.
“This irresponsible and unacceptable act must be severely condemned. Olympique de Marseille has all the evidence and it is immediately passed to the authorities.”
In the aftermath of this incident, Marseille’s match against Rennes which was supposed to be held on the same day was postponed. This is decided directly by the Ligue 1 operator.
“I have been a player at Olympique de Marseille for 13 years. I know everything about this club, but today’s incident has made me sad and it is unacceptable,” said Marseille captain, Steve Mandanda.
“We are footballers and a sports crisis in no way justifies such a wave of violence. It is a time to calm down.”
