Michael Owen Supports Robert Lewandowski Wins Ballon D’Or 2021
By db-admin
DBasia.news – Liverpool legend Michael Owen has backed Bayern Munich’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or award, following an outstanding season in the last two years.
In 2020, Robert Lewandowski can be considered the sole candidate to win the Ballon d’Or, after he scored 55 goals and presented the treble winner for Bayern Munich.
Unfortunately, France Football chose to cancel the Golden Ball award due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Then, this year Lewandowski was included in the 30 2021 Ballon d’Or nominations list, along with a series of other star players such as Jorginho, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, to Mo Salah. The number of star players who have won trophies, both with the national team or with the club has made this year’s Ballon d’Or winner a debate.
Messi was once called one of the favourites, because he managed to present the 2021 Copa America for the Argentine national team, then there was also Jorginho who won the Champions League with Chelsea and the 2020 European Cup with the Italian national team.
However, Michael Owen, the 2001 Ballon d’Or winner, preferred Lewandowski to win the award.
“I think Lewandowski was very unfortunate not to win it in the year of COVID at that time (2020), because the award was cancelled,” Michael Owen was quoted as saying by EuroNews.
“He won the Bundesliga again last season, and his goalscoring tally is quite surprising (41 goals). So I thought I would go for Lewandowski. It would be an absolute crime if he went through his career without a Ballon d’Or win.”
