Real Madrid are lucky to win the Champions League

DBasia.news – Ferran Soriano, the boss of Manchester City, expressed his controversial opinion about Real Madrid’s success in the Champions League. According to him, Madrid are lucky enough to be champions this season.

Los Blancos did have an extraordinary season in 2021/22. Carlo Ancelotti’s team defeated a number of top teams on their way to winning the UCL, their second trophy after La Liga.

Madrid also defeated Man City in the semifinals. Man City had won the two-legged duel, won 4-3 in the first leg (Etihad) and led 1-0 in the second leg. However, Madrid showed their magic and turned the situation around.

Madrid’s journey was not easy. They have to beat PSG, Chelsea, Man City in the knockout stages. Then beat Liverpool in the final to become champions.

Madrid’s success is extraordinary. They became the most successful team in the Champions League, a trophy that Man City really coveted.

Even so, Soriano had a different view. According to him, Man City should not be too disappointed about the failure in the UCL. It takes luck to win the competition, as was the case for Madrid.

“We want the Champions League trophy, but we know that there is a bit of luck that matters and we are not obsessed with it,” said Soriano.

“People talk about Madrid’s success in recent years and I think it’s fair to say they were a bit lucky.”

“In fact, maybe I can say that they deserved to lose to PSG, to Chelsea, to us or to Liverpool.”

Soriano strengthened his opinion on luck by pointing out the difficulties Madrid had decades ago. El Real has also experienced difficulties in European competitions, even though they have an extraordinary squad.

“People forget that in the 80s and 90s, Madrid had a fantastic team, one of the best in history. There was Butragueno, La Quinta, but they couldn’t win [Europe],” Soriano continued.

“Milan got rid of them every year. So, somehow now they are lucky, but they have also been unlucky for many years,” he concluded.
