Remembering David Beckham’s last goal
By db-admin
DBasia.news – David Beckham, England captain, scored and gave his last goal for the Three Lions at the 2006 World Cup. At that time, Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team met Ecuador in the round of 16.
On paper, England were more favored to win the match. The reason is, David Beckham and colleagues managed to advance to the round of 16 with the title winning Group B with 7 points from 2 wins and 1 draw.
However, in that match both teams actually played tough by playing a goalless draw in the first half. The long-awaited goal was finally born in the second half through a brilliant action from David Beckham in the 60th minute.
Beckham managed to create a goal against the Ecuadorian national team which was escorted by Cristian Mora through his trademark free kick with his right foot. The former AC Milan, curled kick off from a distance of about 35 meters on the left side. Thanks to him, England won a narrow 1-0 victory and strolled into the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals and faced Portugal.
Armed with a classy squad such as John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, to Wayne Rooney, the England national team failed to answer public expectations by stopping in the round of 16.
The Three Lions lost painfully to Portugal on penalties. 3 of England’s 4 penalty takers missed. The performance of Ricardo, the Portuguese national team goalkeeper at that time was brilliant.
Owen Hargreaves became the only English kicker who was able to beat Ricardo. Until finally Cristiano Ronaldo’s 5th kick knocked England out.
Beckham had already mentioned before his objection to Germany, that the 2006 World Cup would be the last event he participated in with England.
“Maybe my legs will still be strong enough to play with for years to come, but the (World Cup 2006) will be my last chance to win the World Cup,” Beckham stated.
