DBasia.news – David Moyes and Ed Woodward are considered responsible for the decline in Manchester United’s achievements over the last decade. Rio Ferdinand has now exposed the two figures in the transfer market.
Manchester United appointed David Moyes as the new manager in the summer of 2013. He has a heavy responsibility to replace Sir Alex Ferguson who retired.
In the near future, Ed Woodward was also appointed as the new CEO of the club. He replaced David Gill who also stepped down following Ferguson’s move.
With his new position, Woodward is fully responsible for Manchester United’s activities in the transfer market. He was demanded to have brought in the player Moyes wanted.
Manchester United also began to be associated with a number of big names in the 2013 summer transfer market. Even though the Red Devils still have a winning squad left by Ferguson.
In that moment, Thiago Alcantara, who strengthened Barcelona, was interested in moving to Old Trafford. He even contacted Ferdinand to help realize his move.
“Before Thiago left Barcelona, he called me. He called me and said he would love to come to Man Utd,” Ferdinand said in an event on his personal Youtube channel.
“So I spoke to people at the club, Moyes and Woodward. I mentioned (about Thiago).”
However, Ferdinand’s efforts to help move Thiago led to disappointment. Moyes and Woodward were not interested in the La Masia dropout.
Though Ferdinand believes Thiago can strengthen Manchester United’s midfield, which was left by Paul Scholes due to retiring. The characters of the two players do have similarities.
“We played Barcelona in America on the pre-season tour (2011) and he was amazing. He played as a number 10 and scored world class goals.”
After receiving a disappointing response, Ferdinand was contacted by Thiago again. He asked for certainty as he was also being chased by Bayern Munich, who had just appointed Pep Guardiola as the new coach.
From there, Ferdinand realized that Thiago prioritized Manchester United over other clubs. But he could not do much and let the player move to Munich.
“He finally called me again the next morning and asked what happened. He also said he had 24 hours to make a decision, otherwise Pep would not take him to Bayern Munich,” Ferdinand continued.
Thiago finally officially moved to Munich. He later transformed into one of the best midfielders in the world under Guardiola.
In the same summer, Manchester United only signed one player on the last day of the transfer market, namely Marouane Fellaini. He was one of Moyes’ favorite player at Everton.
As a result, Manchester United were knocked out of the top four at the end of the 2013-2014 season. Moyes even lost his job before the competition was over.
