Switzerland 1-1 Spain: Two failed Penalties, Sergio Ramos’ Record Is Tarnished

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Real Madrid and Spain national team captain, Sergio Ramos managed to break the international record at the Switzerland vs Spain match in the matchday 5 of the UEFA Nations League Group A4.

Ramos incised a new record beating Gianluigi Buffon, but on the one hand was further from luck when he executed a penalty. The match ended in a 1-1 draw through goal from Remo Freuler (26 ‘) which Gerard Moreno (89’) replied, Switzerland also played with 10 players after Nico Elvedi’s red card.

“Football can be like this. It’s an extraordinary game but sometimes it is unfair. Many things happened and we tried to play our style,” said Luis Enrique, the Spanish coach after the match ended, quoted from Goal.

“We felt that the number nine (central striker) would not be needed in the first half. We lacked a bit of fitness but I thought Switzerland was good.”

“We lacked in the most difficult part, scoring goals. Basically in the first half we deserved to win, and on a second half basis too. It was easy to say after the game that (Alvaro) Morata had to play or Gerard should have played.”

In that match Ramos (34 years old) appeared for the 177 times with the Spanish national team and made him the most international performer in Europe beating Gianluigi Buffon, a goalkeeper with 176 caps for the Italian national team. Ramos’ record is 129 wins and 23 goals.

Unfortunately in that match Ramos had two chances to score from the spot and gave Spain the victory, but in the end failed to execute as the opportunity was stopped by Yann Sommer.

Before that Ramos had scored 25 consecutive penalty goals for the club and country. However, that in no way changes Enrique’s trust in him.

“Sergio Ramos’ record with penalties is up there with the best. It would be unfair to replace him with that task because he missed one, two, three penalties,” added Enrique.

“If there was another penalty, he would take it, if he missed two, taking him off penalty duty would be a joke. There is a list of penalty takers and Sergio Ramos is at the top,” he stated.

The results has put Spain in second place in Group 4 of the UEFA Nations League with eight points, behind Germany’s nine points and above Ukraine (six points) and Switzerland (three points).
